"It has been seven months since my diagnosis and 4 months since the transplant. I am fortunate to be making an incredibly smooth recovery after my transplant. My counts are great, almost completely normal CBC and chemistry. My stamina and energy is back and I can go hiking again with my wife and my dogs. I have not been re-hospitalized since the day I checked out. My magnesium has stabilized and I no longer need IV infusions. I just had my hickman catheter removed this week and it feels so good to not have a big plastic squid hanging out of my chest! And the best news of all is that I just got the results of the 3 month bone marrow and my cells are 100% my sisters, with no evidence of cancer!
I did get some mild GVHD in the form of a skin rash and some GI upset at around the 2 month mark. Steroid cream and budesonide treated both respectively and I did not need to go on pred. I was kind of OK with this. Supposedly people who have mild graft vs host have a lower chance of tumor recurrence.
I still have a long way to go before I feel like I am out of the woods, but I am back to feeling relatively healthy for the first time in a long time.
Also, for those of you that come across this thread looking for info on this rare disease, I would like to point you to another thread on the cancer survivors network that has a bunch of great information. I recently posted my complete treatment plan over there.
