Caring (Really) for Patients Who Use Alternative Therapies for
Cancer - jco.org
"The reasons why people seek alternative therapies for
cancer are broad. Many seek out alternative therapy
when options for conventional therapy have been
exhausted. There is also the recognition that, for some
tumor systems, conventional therapy is of limited
effectiveness and that the side effects of chemotherapy, surgery,
and radiation are feared. For some tumor systems, no conventional
therapy exists and the standard therapy is participation in
phase I or phase II trials. Many patients perceive that the conventional
approach is emotionally or spiritually empty and provides
neither comfort nor solace."

 | From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition
- iom.edu
In the United States, half of all men and one-third of all women will develop cancer in their lifetimes. Advances in the detection and treatment of cancer, combined with an aging population, mean greater numbers of cancer survivors in the near future.
Despite the increase in survivors, however, primary care physicians and other health care providers often are not extremely familiar with the consequences of cancer, and seldom receive explicit guidance from oncologists. Furthermore, the lack of clear evidence for what constitutes best practices in caring for patients with a history of cancer contributes to wide variation in care.

Annual Report to the Nation Finds Cancer Death Rates Still on the Decline
By NIH/National Cancer Institute Oct 5, 2005, 09:02 - foodconsumer.org/
"... Overall cancer incidence rates (the rate at which new cancers are diagnosed) for both sexes have been stable since 1992. Incidence rates were stable in men from 1995 to 2002 and increased 0.3 percent annually in women since 1987 to 2002.
* The persistent increase in overall cancer incidence rates for women can be attributed to increases in rates for breast and six other cancers:
non-Hodgkin lymphoma, melanoma, leukemia, and thyroid, bladder and kidney cancer.

 | Nanotechnology in Cancer Spotlighted at NSTI Nanotech 2005 -
nano.cancer.gov/
"Nanoparticles, ... can have multiple functionalities that can provide detailed information on numerous disease processes simultaneously. Similarly, nanoscale devices can deliver multiple therapeutic agents to a tumor in order to simultaneously attack multiple points in the pathways involved in cancer. Nanotechnology is also generating in vivo biosensors that have the capability of detecting and pinpointing the location of tumors and metastatic lesions that are far smaller than those detectable using conventional technologies. Detecting cancer before it spreads completely changes the game when it comes to treating cancer, since non-metastatic cancer is rarely fatal. Nano-enabled in vivo sensors may also provide rapid information on whether a given therapy is actually working as expected, and targeted nano-based therapeutics that hone in on tumors stand to increase the efficacy of drugs while dramatically reducing potential side effects."

tragedy is so preventable—yet there have been many cases
reported in the media of patients being injected with vincristine
intrathecally," says Michael R. Cohen, R.Ph., M.S., Sc.D.,
president, ISMP. "These cases are especially tragic because
the patient experiences paralysis and a slow and extremely painful
deterioration, which in nearly all cases results in death."

 | Poll Finds Many Americans Believe Cancer Myths
An American Cancer Society survey finds up to half of Americans mistakenly believe surgery can spread cancer, and more than one in four thinks a cure for cancer already exists but is being held back by a profit-driven industry. Results of the survey are published in the August 1, 2005 issue of CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. The authors say it shows the American public is significantly ill-informed about cancer, and that most overestimate how much they know.

 | Advances in the biology and therapy of diffuse large B-cell
lymphoma-moving towards a molecularly targeted approach. Blood.
2005 Apr 26; PMID:
15855278
Comment: I think this abstract is saying that until we test for molecular expression, we will continue to subject a good percentage of patients to unproductive toxicity - getting the side effects of the treatment without the benefit; and
that we will also fail to drive research to address this disease entity: the clinical subtype of diffuse lymphoma that will not respond to standard aggressive chemo.
This concept applies to all cancers, including less aggressive types of lymphoma, such as follicular and MALT.

"Interestingly, Pokemon is highly expressed in a subset of T-cell
lymphomas, although Pokemon was barely detectable in normal human thymic
CD3-positive cells. Furthermore, Pokemon is strongly expressed in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and follicular lymphoma (FL), in whose
pathogenesis BCL6 is known to be involved."

"Almost every cell of the immune system expresses receptors that are specific for the Fc region of Ig isotypes. The Fc
receptors for IgG (FcγR) play a critical role in immunity by linking the IgG antibody mediated responses with cellular
effector and regulatory functions of the immune system."

 | Volunteers Needed
A new research study is seeking to attract individuals with blood related cancers who may be considering enrolling in a clinical trial.
This study will investigate what factors influence the decision to
enter a clinical trial or not. Participants will complete two questionnaires
in approximately 45 minutes or less. All answers will be strictly confidential. The Principal Investigator is Jennifer M.
Bradley, RN, MSN who can be contacted at (513) 777-3123 or jenniferbradley@zoomtown.com
