While undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer, I shared with my art therapist that I had been feeling "invisible." She encouraged me to close my eyes, be still and wait patiently until an image appeared. In my mind's eye, I saw a golden flower showered in golden light. With crayons, I drew a sunflower surrounded by other sunflowers, grass, sky and swirling lines.

During the following week, however, I was haunted by the fact that what I'd drawn didn't seem true to my initial image. At our next session, again using crayons, I felt a sense of satisfaction when I drew a lone sunflower, using golden tones with a golden background.

Several weeks later, in a painting class, I returned to the sunflower as my subject, portrayed this time with light shining down upon it. No longer feeling invisible, I entitled this painting "Sunflower I, Healing Light." This exercise in creative expression reassured me that God always sees me and that I am being healed on many levels. - Sandi Riggs
